AKRON, Ohio -- With the festivities and celebrations from last weekend's Fourth of July holiday still resonating around the country, World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational tournament officials found the timing perfect to announce several military initiatives for the 2010 event.
The highlight of these initiatives is a new ticket policy for military personnel and their families. Tournament officials today announced that for the first time in the tournament's history, complimentary admission courtesy of Lockheed Martin will be extended to all active duty, retired and reserve military personnel and their dependents with valid IDs. This offer applies to both competitive and non-competitive tournament days during the 2010 Bridgestone Invitational, which returns to historic Firestone Country Club from Aug. 3-8, 2010.
"Coming off the Fourth of July holiday, we couldn't think of a better time to make this announcement," said Donald Padgett III, Executive Director of the Bridgestone Invitational. "This new admission policy is the best way we know to thank our men and women in uniform for the sacrifices they have made and continue to make."
"We are pleased to once again provide this opportunity to these brave men and women who ensure our freedom each and every day," said Colleen Arthur, director of Lockheed Martin's operations in Akron.
In addition to the complimentary admission policy, all active duty, reserve and retired military personnel, and their dependents, will have access to the Birdies for the Brave Patriots' Outpost on Saturday, Aug. 7. The Birdies for the Brave Patriots' Outpost is a hospitality tent adjacent to No. 18 green which will serve complimentary food and beverages to military personnel and their dependents while they enjoy the action at the demanding finishing hole at Firestone Country Club's South Course. A special Military Appreciation Ceremony will also take place Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. in the Championship Club on No. 16.
For military personnel interested in obtaining their complimentary tickets, please visit www.bridgestoneinvitational.com and click on "Tickets." Scroll down the screen and select the section labeled "Military Tickets" and enter the promo code "GOLF" to print the tickets at home. A valid military ID will still need to be presented at the gate along with the ticket.
The Bridgestone Invitational annually draws one of strongest fields of the year with players traveling from all corners of the globe to Firestone Country Club. Every year game's greatest stars converge in Akron to vie for the Bridgestone Invitational title, but the true winners of the event are local charities. The Bridgestone Invitational annually donates more than $800,000 to charities throughout Northeast Ohio.
Over the years, professional golf has donated more than $19 million to more than 200 worthy causes in Northeast Ohio, including Akron Children's Hospital, the United Way of Greater Cleveland and The First Tee Chapters of Akron, Cleveland and Canton
